April 6, 2014, Spring OPL, Game 6, "Fury Rain on TSC's Parade, Post Another 2-0 Victory"
Even a light rain at the Keas Soccer Complex in Bixby could not dampen the spirts of the Fury as they knocked off the 01 TSC Hurricane (Red) by a score of 2-0. The victory gives the Fury 16 points out of a possible 18 in the OPL Second Division standings, and with just four games left on the OPL calendar, promotion remains squarely in the Fury's sights.
In the early stages of the game winger Cara Compton was running rampant, using her speed to cause TSC fits. Just four minutes into the game it was Cara's cross that enabled Jenna Miller to squeeze off the first Fury shot of the game, but her effort curled wide.
The Fury's pressure continued to mount and in the 7th minute the TSC defense cracked. Attacking midfielder Keely Chapman sent a high looping pass into the path of Jenna Miller. Jenna took a moment to settle the ball and then stroked a high arching shot over the TSC keeper and into the back of the net. Just like that Jenna had a goal, Keely an assist and the Fury a lead.
Cara Compton was next to breach the TSC defense, letting fly with a shot on goal that veered wide of the mark. Juliette Davis came even closer in the 21st minute when her shot on goal was parried at short distance by the TSC goalie just moments before an offsides flag halted play.
Even with the sustained level of pressure from the Fury, TSC still made forays on the Fury goal. For example, at the 13 minute mark central back Elle Abbey cleared a dangerous ball from the Fury box. The Fury defensive back line was unstoppable, though. Always first to the ball, Katie Fowler, Maddy Childers, Elle Abbey and Eden Holetzkey put on a defensive clinic. So much so that the Girl of the Match ("GOM") award had to be shared between deensive stalwarts Katie Fowler and Maddy Childers who shined on defense all afternoon.
The Fury doubled their advantage with ten minutes left in the first half. Jenna Miller played the role of provider on this goal, drawing out the goalkeeper and then playing the ball to a streaking Ashlee Cabbiness. Ashlee had just a fraction of a moment before she would crash into the goal post, but she used that nano-second to use her shoulder to bundle in the bouncing ball for a Fury goal. Cassidy Potter theratened to increase that lead in the final minute of the half with a free kick that was saved at the near post.
TSC was in a more attacking mode in the second half, but the Fury defense would not yield a goal. In fact, the defense has yet to give up a goal in six games of OPL play. At the 45 minute mark it was Eden who pulled the trifecta, winning a tackle, clearing the ball from danger and distributing a pass to the midfield to start a counter-attack.
Things got chippy a few mintues later and Keely Chapman's name was placed in the book for a yellow card handed out for hooking a TSC defender. Kelsi Fitzgerald helped exact a measure of revenge two minutes later when her pancake of a TSC midfielder left the player in the white jersey in a sobbing mess on the pitch.
In the closing stages of the game Ally Mayberry had a shot on goal off a corner kick that was narrowly blocked by a TSC defender. And, Elle Abbey had a free kick shot on goal that was gathered by the TSC keeper. Otherwise, it was business as usual, as the Fury defense clamped down on TSC and managed to finish a full 70 minutes of play wihtout surrendering a single shot on goal!
GOM's Maddy Childers and Katie Fowler owned the defensive side of the pitch. Maddy led the team with 17 passes. Katie was first on the team with 11 defensive clearances, and Maddy was second with 8. Katie doled out 3 pancakes, and Maddy was first on the team with 5 headers. These two defensive GOM's were helped immensely by Elle Abbey with her 6 clerances, 10 passes and 2 fouls drawn, and Eden Holetzky with her 13 passes, 6 clearances and 3 tackles. Allison Austin had a comfy day in goal, registering a clearnce but otherwise enjoying another clean sheet.
Jenna Miller led the team in shots on goal with four, and her goal and assist went nicely with her 16 passes. Keely Chapman racked up another assist, one of her 10 passes on the day and she won 3 tackles. Ashlee Cabbiness scored a goal and posted 5 passes. Juliette Davis had a shot on goal, drew a foul on TSC and won defensive tackle. Cara Compton was active all afternoon, putting up a shot on goal to go along with a team-high 5 tackles.
Ally Mayberry completed 11 passes, drew a foul on TSC, won 2 tackles and shared the team lead in pancakes with 3 bone-rattling hits. Megan Jones had a fine day of passing with 15 connectiosn and she pocketed 2 tackles. Kelsi Fitzgerald was likewise active in the middle of the field, with 11 passes, 2 tackles and 2 clearances. Cassidy Potter used her strong leg for a free kick shot on goal, and she had 3 passes and a defensive clearance.
The Fury step out of OPL play next weekend when they lace up their cleats and play in the Lexus Cup in Tulsa.
