Don was raised in Norman and grew up playing in the NYSA system. He played for Celtic ’78, ’79, and ’80, and was a member of the Celtic ‘80 1998 state championship team. He was also a four year varsity soccer player in high school where he played for three years at Norman High and one year at Norman North and was a member of the Norman High 1997 state championship team and the 1998 All-State team. After High school he attended the University of Oklahoma where he earned a bachelors degree in Marketing.
He began coaching at NYSA in August of 1999 and has coached numerous teams in the club since that time. In that time he has won many tournament championships including winninig three state championship and taking seven others to the state finals. He also coached Celtic 93 green to the regional quarterfinals in 2007 and 2010. Don has also been an Oklahoma ODP coach for several years.
He has been the director of NYSA soccer camps sine 2003, began the NYSA soccer academy in 2004, was named the Director of Player Development in 2007, and Director of Coaching in 2010. Don was awarded the 2006 OSA Boys Coach of the Year and currently holds NSCAA Advanced National Diploma, NSCAA Director of Coaching Diploma, and a USSF National Youth license.
Don began coaching as an assistant coach for the Norman North boy’s soccer team in 1999 and was the head coach from 2007 - 2009. He has been a part of two state championship teams, once in 2000 and again in 2003, and one state finalist in 2008. He became the head coach of the Norman North girls in 2011. The team won their first State Championship in program history in 2014. Don was named the 2014 Daily Oklahoman Coach of the Year, and the 2015 Central Athletic Conference Coach of they year.
He is married to Sharlee Rother. Shar also grew up in Norman and attended the University of Oklahoma where she earned a bachelors degree in advertising. Shar currently has her own photography business Sharlee Rother Photography. They have a daughter named Bekham and son named Rowynn.
